Semestre
Breve descriptor:
This course is devoted to the study of the external history of English, i.e., the social and cultural conditions that have played a role in shaping the language. The aim is thus to provide students with an overview of the implications of the main historical events involved in the development of English from the time it was introduced in the British Isles to the present day.
Requisitos
No specific prior knowledge is required. However, the student must have the appropriate level of general competencies to read and interpret articles, synthesize information, analyze data, extract and communicate relevant conclusions, and use academic terminology. The course is taught in English and therefore a sufficient level of the language is requiered (C.1.1 minimum).
The aim is for the student to come to know the different cultural contexts that have shaped the development of the English language and the effect each has had in determining its changes and trajectory. From predominantly monographic perspectives, through the selection of specific topics and the study of primary sources, the relationship of English with various social classes and groups throughout history will be analyzed: situations of creolization, bilingualism, and multilingualism; language as a political and socio-economic instrument; the role of education and literacy in language development; the relationships between language and religion; the relationship between scientific development and linguistic varieties; connections between language and ideology through concepts such as correctness, superiority, or prestige; and the attitudes that have been maintained regarding English over time.
